| Identification | Pareiorhaphis species are primarily diagnosed
from remaining neoplecostomines by having the canal plate firmly articulated to the preopercle, and by a series of
sexually-dimorphic features of hypertrophied odontodes of adult males, giving the fish a hispid appearance. Absence of adipose fin; cleithral width 27.3-31.7% SL; presence of normally developed dermal plates on the dorsal surface of body; nuptial males with few and delicate hypertrophied odontodes on the lateral margin of head, usually hidden by extensive soft fleshy lobes. |
