Identification | The genus Parotocinclus can readily be distinguished from Otocinclus by the presence of an adipose fin in the former. Easy to identify by its naked abdomen and the evenly spread spots on the body. |
Sexing | Males possess the characteristic conical urogenital papilla, positioned just behind the anal opening. Adult males also possess a low fleshy flap along the dorsal margin of the first thickened pelvic-fin ray, that is absent in females. The flap is slightly deeper basally and progressively narrows distally. Flap is absent in juvenile males and females. |
