Type Locality Ponds in South 24, Parganas District, West Bengal, India.
Etymology Pethia is the generic vernacular name for small cyprinids in Sinhala. aurea: From the Latin adjective ‘aurea’, meaning golden, in reference to the golden color of this fish.
