Type Locality Ubangi River at Banzyville, Democratic Republic of Congo, about 4°18'N, 21°11'E.

Etymology Phractura: From the Greek phraktos, meaning fenced in and oura, meaning tail; in reference to the bony plates enclosing the slender caudal peduncle.
