Scientific Name Pseudancistrus reus  Armbruster & Taphorn, 2008
Common Name
Type Locality Río Caroní in a small side channel very close to the convergence of the Río Claro, 7°54'30"N, 63°02'50"W, Estado Bolivar, Venezuela.
Etymology Greek, pseudes = false + Greek, agkistron = hook or barb. "False Ancistrus", meaning that it is like an Ancistrus, but yet not quite. From the Latin reus, meaning one who is accused or arraigned like a defendant, prisoner, criminal, or culprit; in reference to the barred pattern that looks like the stripes of the stereotypical prisoner’s uniform.

Identification Pseudancistrus is the only genus of the Ancistrini (former Ancistrinae) that lacks evertible cheek plates. Because of this characteristic, it has at times been placed in the Hypostominae.
General Remarks The species was described from two specimens collected in the Rio Caroni before the Caruachi Reservoir was created. Their actual range, if any, outside of this area is unknown.
