Identification | The genus Schistura is the largest genus within the family Nemacheilidae, containing at present about 190 nominal species. They are typically found amongst stones in moderate to fast flowing streams and rivers in foothill to mountainous habitats. The distribution area of the genus stretches from the Near East through the Indian subcontinent until Vietnam and southern China. Schistura koladynensis is distinguished from its congeners by a combination of characters: 10-11 brown bars on the body, the black bar on the caudal-fin base not extending its full height, specific arrangement of vertical rows of coloured spots on the caudal fin, 8 1/2 branched dorsal-fin rays, complete lateral line, deeply forked caudal fin with 9 + 8 branched rays, well developed axillary pelvic lobe, nine pores in the preoperculomandibular canal and small barbels that do not extend beyond anterior rim of orbit. |
