Etymology | The latin alba meaning white, and the noun operculum, meanng lid or cover, in reference to the distinctive depigmented posterior margin seen in the operculum of this species. |

Identification | Uniformly light to dark brown, lighter on the belly. All fins with brownish bases and narrow, depigmented border, this border being wider in younger fish. Operculum with wide, depigmented margin which extends onto underside of head. |
Sexing | In ventral view especially, females are much broader in the body than males of equal age and rearing practices. |
