| Identification | Trichomycterus aguarague is readily distinguished from all other congeners from western and southern South America by having five precaudal vertebrae, maxillary barbel base engrossed and wide like a skin flap or fold, premaxillary bone smaller than maxilla, and the odontodes embedded in thick integument that covers interopercle (except this character is shared with T. alterus (Marini, Nichols & La Monte), T. belensis Fernández & Vari, T. ramosus Fernández, and T. boylei (Nichols), which are all from Argentina.)Color in alcohol: T. aguarague demonstrates considerable variation in intensity of pigmentation on the head and body. Most have pattern of distinct, albeit faint, marbled formed by patches of small dark chromatophores. Darkly pigmented specimens with marbled, dark pigmentation present on dorsal and dorsolateral surfaces of head and trunk and all but ventral-most portion of caudal peduncle. Ventral surface of head ranging from lightly pigmented to hyaline. All barbels pigmented at least to some degree and opercular and interopercular odontodes and oral dentition unpigmented, even in overall more darkly pigmented individuals. Dorsal, anal, and pectoral fins with irregular dark pigmentation present on rays and membranes. Caudal fin with membranes irregularly darker than those of other unpaired fins. Pelvic fin ranging from lightly pigmented to hyaline. |

| Furniture | In the wild, found in mountainous rivers and streams that are generally 3–6m wide and 0.32–1.35m deep, with clear waters running over sandy and rock-pebble substrates, at elevations of approximately 615–910 m. The region is characterized by torrential hydrological conditions associated with abundant summer rains between January and March and a May to November dry season. Water temperatures 24–30C and the pH 7.5. Water current velocities were 9.4–15.6m/s during the dry season. |
