Type Locality Small stream tributary of Córrego de Mutuca, to right side of road Belo Horizonte-Nova Lima, kilometer 20, Rio São Francisco basin, Município de Nova Lima, Estado de Minas Gerais, Brazil, elevation 890 meters.

Etymology Trichomycterus: From the Greek trichos, meaning hair and mykter, meaning nose; in reference to the barbels.
