Type Locality Río Amarillo at Famatina, 28°55'S, 67°31'W, eastern slope of Sierra de Famantina, Dept. Chilecito, Province de La Rioja, Argentina.

Etymology Trichomycterus: From the Greek trichos, meaning hair and mykter, meaning nose; in reference to the barbels.
