Type Locality Río Cana at Cana, Río Tuyra system, Panama.
Synonym(s) Pygidium septentrionale, Pygidium striatum, Trichomycterus septentrionale, Trichomycterus striatum
Pronunciation trick oh mick terr uss.
Etymology Trichomycterus: From the Greek trichos, meaning hair and mykter, meaning nose; in reference to the barbels.

Distribution Central and South America: Río Magdalena drainage, Colombia on the Atlantic drainage to the Río Cocle del Norte, Panama. On the Pacific side, it is known from the Río Dagua, Colombia, to the Río Grande de Térraba drainage in Costa Rica.
