Type Locality	Mountain stream tributary to the Rio Grande drainage, Rio Paraíba do Sul basin, Serra dos Órgãos, inside the campus of the Instituto Vital Brazil, Nova Friburgo Municipality, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, 22°20'51"S, 42°37'18"W, elevation about 1,130 meters.

Etymology	Trichomycterus: From the Greek trichos, meaning hair and mykter, meaning nose; in reference to the barbels.
