Scientific Name Zaireichthys kavangoensis  Eccles, Tweddle & Skelton, 2011
Common Name
Type Locality 5 km west of Nkurenkuru, Kavango River, 17°38'S, 18°34'E, Namibia.

Etymology Zaireichthys: From the Zaire river and the Greek ichthys, meaning fish; in reference to the type of the genus and its collection locality. The specific name refers to the river (Kavango) from which the type series was collected.

Size 27mm or 1.1" SL. Find near, nearer or same sized spp.
Identification The majority of species are small and compact, have a defense mechanism of three ossified spines in the dorsal and pectoral fins,being able to lock them into place which makes the genus different from all other Amphiliidae.

From the original description, A series of dark patches dorsally, a second series of about ten patches mid-laterally and a third series ventro-laterally from above back of pelvic to above base of anal, scattered brown flecks between the blotches anteriorly, becoming more widely spaced posteriorly. Head marbled, cheeks pale. Melanophores on body small. Dark spot at tip of dorsal spine. Dark patch at base of caudal fin, bar about midway along fin and trace of another bar near tip of fin.

Furniture In nature the majority of species are found over or in sand in flowing rivers. There is one known lake dwelling species from Lake Malawi which is also found over sand and living in snail shells.
