Common Name
Type Locality	Lake Kainji, lower Niger River basin, Nigeria.
Pronunciation	mah lah TERR oo russ
Etymology	Malapterurus: From the Greek malakos, meaning soft, pteron, meaning fin and oura, meaning tail; presumably in reference to the adipose fin, which appears all the more prominent in the absence of the rayed dorsal fin.

Size	1020mm or 40.2" SL. Find near, nearer or same sized spp.
Identification	Body with moderately to very large black spots irregularly scattered. Compared to M. electricus, its oral tooth bands are much larger.
Habitat Information
Distribution	Africa: known from Niger River and Volta River system, White Nile (Barro and Alvero Rivers), and Omo River; probably also in Chad and Senegal basins but has not been collected here.
