Scientific Name Parailia spiniserrata  Svensson, 1933
Common Name
Type Locality Swamps along Gambia River, MacCarthy Island area, western Africa.
Pronunciation Pah RAIL ee ah
Etymology The generic name comes from the Latin prefix par-, meaning equal and Ailia, a genus of schilbeid catfishes, in reference to the similarity between this genus and Ailia. From the Latin spina meaning spine and serratus meaning serrated, referring to the strong serrations on the inner side of the pectoral spine in this species.

Identification All species of this genus have no dorsal fin and are small being no larger than 150 mm SL.

Coloration is silvery, more or less dotted with irregular and star-shaped deep brown chromatophores dorsally and laterally.(Svensson 1933).Adipose fin always absent, inner side of the pectoral spine with stronly developed serrations.59-70 soft anal fin rays.
